Simon Rodia is one of the most fascinating and inspiring figures in the history of architecture. Born in 1902 in what is now the city of Huntington Park, Rodia was originally interested in engineering and had aspirations to become a successful architect. However, during his time as an undergraduate at UCLA, Rodia became fascinated with the art of building after seeing a movie about Walter Gropius, the founder of modernist architecture.

Rodia eventually decided to become an architect, but found it difficult to get started in the profession due to a lack of experience and knowledge. However, he persevered and started making small-scale architectural projects on his own. In 1938, Rodia completed his first major project - the Watts Junk Towers in Los Angeles. The towers are made from recycled materials including old cars and tires, which gave them their distinctive appearance.
